The transition from west coast to east coast hasn't been too difficult (I hope I don't eat those words in a week!). I have learned to navigate the big bad subways and Bronx buses. I have ventured to places that friends, Food Network, and the Not for Tourists Guide recommend. I have searched for jobs and will be going on more interviews this upcoming week. Most importantly, I have had time to spend with myself...and not in a hermit type of way.
Sure, I consider myself an extrovert...wouldn't you? But, ya know, quality "me time" feels great. After the craziness that was the end of my college career, I was (am?) in need of time to unpack all that I had experienced. I have whiplash from the speed at which everything came: finishing up at Cal, moving out of my home, saying farewell to my friends and family, moving to the city, and beginning this new adventure.
Exploring NY on my own is very empowering. Don't get me wrong, I would love company (please, come visit!), but it's fun getting to know the city at my own pace. With each successful voyage to Manhattan and safe return to the Bronx I feel that I can and will make it here.
Random thoughts:
- I will never bring my child to NYC. I am not as strong as the mothers who carry their strollers up crowded flights of stairs while a baby is strapped to their backs
- New Yorkers are not as mean as everyone told me
- Apparently the subway is THE place to 1. read 2. put on make up 3. not make small talk
- I feel my arms getting stronger thanks to toting a hella heavy purse (and sometimes other shopping bags) and keeping it under a strong hold for fear of getting purse jacked
- I have chosen to be naive to how dirty the city and the subways are
- It's important to stay hydrated during this hella humid summer; it is equally important to be conscious of where decent bathrooms are
- A kind word/gesture from a stranger is as precious to me as a phone call from a friend

Dude. Your entries make me happy.
Keep up the good work and go on more adventures! I'm living vicariously through you.
While, of course, being safe.

I'm recommending my friend bina to you on facebook so you guys can get to know each other, she's also in the bronx, goes to school at fordham, and is there in the summer for internships. She's got an apartment somewhere i'm not sure its relative closeness to you. anyway, i just thought you might like to meet people after you spend some time getting to know NYC on your own ; )
