counting tuesdays

Daddy died on a Tuesday. And, for a while, his death became the origin of my timeline. I would constantly categorize events, memories, conversations (anything, really) as "before" or "after" he died. On Tuesdays I would count how many weeks had elapsed since the worst thing in my life happened. Yesterday was 12.

Sometimes I'm amazed that life continues for me, my Momma, my Kuyas and my nephews. When the grief takes over I relive the moments that break my heart. ER, ICU, phone calls, Rose Hills, viewing, mass, eulogy, funeral. Having to break the news to Auntie, Kuya, my nephews. Momma shedding tears that distract us from her strength. Unforgettable. Momma crying out, "I love you, Darling!" as Daddy is laid to rest.

Thankfully my memory becomes less and less vivid. The pain, however, hurts just as much as it did twelve Tuesdays ago.

As Momma usually says, while fighting back the tears, "this is hard." Learning to live without Daddy's "hi, baby" when I call him on my walks home or his smile when I see him after a long absence isn't easy. Oddly enough the pain my family and I feel is really a testament to the love that we shared. Losing Daddy is so hard because we loved each other so much.

I will miss Daddy every day for the rest of my life. And I will thank God every day for blessing me with a supportive, loving Dad.

Thank you for everything, Daddy. I love you.
