You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the [person] who’ll decide where to go.
-Dr. Seuss Oh! The Places You'll Go
I am the person who decides where to go now. Scary.Until recently my life's decisions were dictated by my schooling. Each year was completed just to get to the next grade, the next step in education. Twelve years in Southern California. Four years in Northern California. Now each move is at my discretion. Next June I could leave New York and find a new city to call my temporary home. Or, I could stay where I am for another year.I know where I need to be right now, but I don't know where I'm headed next...and that's oh k.
I'm beginning to feel that home may not be confined to four walls, a ceiling, and a floor. It is more than a place where I live. It is more than where my family is located. It is more than a feeling of being safe.Feeling at home is the warmth of my mother's hug, the smile on my father's face, the sarcasm delivered with love from my brother, the endless amount of energy my nephews pump throughout the house, and the excitement of sharing stories around the table.Feeling at home is the experience of growing up alongside childhood friends, the experimental meal/dessert shared with hungry and desperate roomies, the freedom to b*tch, cry, indulge, and dream without judgment, and the transition from friend to housepet to life long confidant. Feeling at home is the self assurance that I am comfortable in this city, in this new apartment, in this new evolving self.I feel a little homesick.
