so, how's new york?

When the stars align and I am fortunate enough to catch up with folks I haven't seen since I left Berkeley, the dreaded question always comes up...

So, how's New York?

[sigh]

In all honesty, my feelings towards New York fluctuate as often as the NYSE.

Did work suck? Is my face frozen?
If the answer is yes...

Living in New York is too big a challenge to handle. I'm often overwhelmed by my responsibilities here. It's quite easy for me to feel inadequate as a teacher and fall into a slump. New York is not as glamorous as others may imagine. It's a struggle to find a community and to find a place in this city; which is especially difficult to manage when I was so comfortable in my own skin in California.

Did I have a great day at work?
Is the weather bearable? If the answer is yes...

Awesome, I [heart] NY. Sometimes I'm in disbelief that I live in New York. I'm in awe of the privilege to be 23 (holy cow, I'm 23!) and experiencing New York City. These are the days I walk around Midtown while singing Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway in my head. Never have I felt so independent!

In my heart I know that New York is exactly where I need to be at this point of my life. I am proud of myself for moving and I have faith that in time New York City will be as much a part of me as Berkeley is. Someday I will be back in California, but for now I've got a lot to learn in New York.

P.s. Lots of love to the womyn who continue to amaze me. Y'all keep me sane and I cannot thank you all enough for your refreshing honesty. I am a better womyn for knowing each of you. I appreciate and love you all.

yes, we will

Today, along with many proud Americans, my eyes were fixated on a screen as history unfolded. During class I had the privilege of witnessing the momentous inauguration of dreamboat President Barack H. Obama with my students. A shared sense of pride, hope and accomplishment filled our cramped classroom as our 44th president took office. I cannot help but feel inspired

"Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations." -Obama's Inaugural Address 1.20.09
God bless America.
